Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has been sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment after the Bombay High Court overturned his acquittal in the high-profile 2013 rape case.
The case relates to allegations made by a former junior colleague, who accused Tejpal of raping her inside a hotel elevator during the THiNK Festival in Goa in November 2013.
A Goa trial court acquitted Tejpal in 2021, but the Bombay High Court later set aside that verdict, finding sufficient grounds to convict him. Following the conviction, the court imposed a 10-year prison sentence and granted Tejpal two weeks to surrender before authorities.
Tejpal has consistently denied the allegations throughout the legal proceedings. His legal team is expected to challenge the High Court's decision before the Supreme Court of India.
The case drew widespread attention across India and sparked debate over workplace sexual misconduct, accountability, and the treatment of survivors within the media industry. It also became one of the country's most closely watched legal battles involving a prominent journalist.
